MEET THE CEO

– Duery Smith

Duery Smith is a highly accomplished founder and CEO of Flame Forward Productions, a film company that seeks to bring attention to the accomplishments, challenges, and achievements of African American firefighters in the fire service. Currently, Mr. Smith is working on his latest project, Community Heroes, which serves as an educational tool and recruitment avenue for those not aware of the contributions African Americans have made in the fire service.

Mr. Smith is a true advocate for firefighters and a highly decorated firefighter himself. He joined the New York Fire Department in the 1980s and spent over 20 years in service, working his entire career at Ladder #136 FD. Unfortunately, he had to retire in 2004 due to a career-ending injury, which required him to learn how to walk again. However, that did not stop him from continuing his advocacy for firefighters.

In addition to his work with Flame Forward Productions, Mr. Smith was instrumental in a class action lawsuit against the city of New York. Along with other key members such as President(s) John Coombs, Paul Washington, and First VP Mike Marshall, they worked with Levi Ratner law firm to file the lawsuit during Mayor Bloomberg’s term. The lawsuit, which is covered in the book Firefight by Ginger Adams Otis, is an essential part of the history of African American firefighters.

When Duty Calls, We Answer with Cameras Rolling

Mr. Smith’s dedication to serving the community is evident in his continuous drive to “service before self.” He believes in the phrase “Each one teach one,” and he stands on the shoulders of great souls, striving to continue the fight for justice. His work with Flame Forward Productions and his advocacy for firefighters reflect his unwavering commitment to promoting equality and justice.
